Car catches fire in Mount Washington

A car caught fire in Mount Washington Wednesday night, sending flames as high as 20 feet in the air, according to witnesses.

The fire department said no injuries were reported and the fire was put out shortly after firefighters arrived on the scene in the 2500 block of Manhattan Ave. around 8:30 p.m.

The cause is under investigation, Baltimore fire department spokesman Ian Brennan said.

Nikolaus Dunlap, a 14-year-old who was visiting from Alaska with his mother, said he and his sister went out on the street, saw the flames and called 911. Dunlap and his mother said they didn't see anyone near the car, which they said was parallel-parked when the fire started.

"It started out as a car alarm, and then it sounded like a crazy firework explosion," Dunlap said.
