Mercy High School President Sister Carol E. Wheeler, RSM, has announced she will retire at the end of the academic year, after 35 years leading the all-girls Catholic school.

During her tenure, she organized capital campaigns that built The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Auditorium in 2003 and renovated five science labs in time for the opening of school this year.

A member of the Sisters of Mercy, Wheeler came to the school as an English teacher soon after it opened in 1960. In 1977, she became principal and held the office until 2009, when she was named president.

The school has put together a search committee, chaired by Sister Patricia Smith. Members will work with the board of trustees to find a successor in time for the 2013 school year, said Helen T. Schneider, board chair.
