Utility work will force multiple lane closures in downtown Baltimore for about 30 days, starting Thursday, and "may cause significant delays," according to the city transportation department.

The work is being conducted by Baltimore Gas & Electric Co., which is doing routine maintenance on a gas main, said Rachael Lighty, a BGE spokeswoman.

Starting at 6 a.m. Thursday, two center lanes of southbound Light Street will be closed near the intersection of Conway Street, the department said.

The right lane of eastbound Conway Street will also be closed at the intersection with Light Street. Large vehicles and trucks traveling east on Conway Street will be detoured onto South Charles Street.

"Motorists traveling in this vicinity should be on the watch for changing traffic patterns and are encouraged to use alternate routes," the transportation department said.

Lighty said the Light Street closure could be reduced to one lane, depending on the needs of the crew.

She said while the maintenance is expected to take four weeks, "that's an estimate until we begin to do the work."
