A city police officer responding to a report of a domestic dispute shot a man armed with two knives Wednesday morning in East Baltimore after the suspect ignored commands to drop the weapons and advanced toward the officer, according to a spokesman for the department.

About 6:30 a.m., officers went to the 2700 block of Jefferson St. in the McElderry Park community to investigate a domestic disturbance involving a mother and her son, said Anthony Guglielmi, the spokesman. Police had been called about 1:30 a.m. to the same address for a similar complaint, and found the son "intoxicated but compliant" at that time, according to Guglielmi.

In the later incident, the son became belligerent, got into an altercation with the officer and pulled out two knives, Guglielmi said.

"The officer ordered the suspect multiple times to drop the weapons. After the suspect refused, he advanced toward the officer," he said.

The officer fired one shot, hitting the man in the upper body, according to Guglielmi. The suspect was in surgery at an area hospital. Guglielmi said the man was also combative with emergency medical personnel.

Police did not identify the suspect or the officer in the shooting.
