Wondering what's been happening with some of the problems recently highlighted in Watchdog?

Update: The water has stopped running on Millers Island.

Last week, Baltimore public works employees fixed a water leak at Cuckold Point Road and Bay Drive in eastern Baltimore County that had continued since September, and county workers repaired the street.

"Everybody on this end of town is happy," said Edgar Bartlett, one of several neighbors who contacted Watchdog about the problem. They had called Baltimore County's number for the city's 311 service several times, since Baltimore's public works department maintains the city and county water systems. Workers did come out to investigate, but the water continued to flow.

The initial inspectors might have gone out on rainy days or when Chesapeake Bay tides might have been considered the source of the problem, said Baltimore Department of Public Works spokesman Kurt Kocher. However, "we have to make sure that we do the inspection at the appropriate time, when it's not compromised by weather factors," he said.

Since Bartlett lived nearby, workers should have knocked on his door or left an acknowledgment that they looked into the problem, Kocher said. "If we cannot find the problem, we have to try to communicate with the person who filed the complaint so we can resolve it," he said.

Update: Also last week, the lights came on along the harbor promenade in Fells Point. Area resident Mary Ellen Stepowany spotted workers fixing the streetlights lining the Union Wharf path. They had remained dark since their installation two years ago.

Although the city's transportation department built the path, it was up to the developers of that property to connect the lights to a power source, said Adrienne Barnes, a Baltimore transportation spokeswoman. Last month, developer Larry Silverstein said he was still waiting for city staff to point out where to dig. Since then, the city agency's construction and engineering staff has worked with Silverstein to get the work done, Barnes said.

Update: Lastly, Sandra Heningburg reported that city transportation workers have painted new crosswalks on Howard Street at Dolphin Street in Bolton Hill. Heningburg was worried about speeding vehicles hitting Howard Street pedestrians, especially after a recent fatal accident there. The new stripes should alert drivers.
