This week we update you on an issue previously covered in Watchdog.

Update: Yes, Linkwood Road in Baltimore is still closed at its southern end. And it will remain closed until at least the end of the year.

The street, which connects University Parkway in the Tuscany- Canterbury neighborhood with Cold Spring Lane, has been closed since early 2008, when work began on the Lower Stony Run Interceptor, a two-year, $40 million sewer project.

Nearly a year ago, Watchdog told readers that the contractors had encountered rock, an unforeseen circumstance despite surveys completed before the project began. That's why the project continued past the original July 2008 completion date.

Officials with the city's Department of Public Works predicted then that the installation of nearly a mile of 60-inch pipe via tunneling would continue through early 2009.

Watchdog updated readers again in April, with an estimated completion date of May.

The Tuscany-Canterbury Neighborhood Association reported in its spring newsletter that most of the road would reopen in May, although some work would continue near Linkwood's intersection with University Parkway for at least three months.

Linkwood Road from Stoneyford Road north has been paved and is open to traffic, said DPW spokesman Kurt Kocher.

However, work continues on the short portion south of that intersection. That construction is not expected to be completed until the end of the year.

Carol Gamble, who originally asked Watchdog for an update on the project last year, is going to wait before getting her hopes up.

"I'll believe it when I see it," she said.

Detour signs in the area continue to recommend Canterbury Road as an alternative northbound route.
