Reporter Liz Bowie and photographer André F. Chung won the organization's Sigma Delta Chi Award for nondeadline reporting for newspapers with circulations of 100,000 or more. Their entry was the series "On Their Own," which documented the lives of Iven Bailey and Gary Sells as they struggled to complete their senior year at Lake Clifton-Eastern High School.
"This series produced an outpouring of response from readers who were touched by the personal journeys of Iven and Gary, who overcame homelessness to graduate from high school," the memo said.
Bowie and Chung, who spent months with the teens, will receive their award July 14 at the National Press Club alongside fellow winners from the Associated Press, the Chicago Sun-Times, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek and Time magazines, and other publications and broadcasters. The winners were chosen from more than 1,200 entries in 49 categories.
