Document: Dred Scott decision

Issued March 6, 1857, the Dred Scott Supreme Court decision, written by Chief Justice Roger Taney, ruled that Congress could not regulate slavery and that blacks could not be considered U.S. citizens. Taney's role in the case made statues of him in his native Maryland controversial. Statues in Baltimore and Annapolis were removed in summer 2017 following deadly violence at a white nationalist rally in neighboring Virginia while one in Frederick was removed earlier in the year.
