A crash involving four vehicles on the outer loop of Interstate 495 in Montgomery County on Monday night left eight people injured and all outer-loop lanes closed to traffic for hours, according to law enforcement officials.

A duty officer with the Maryland State Police Rockville Barrack, which was the lead investigating agency, said all outer-loop lanes of the highway were closed beginning about 7:50 p.m. and remained closed as of 10 p.m. He said police did not have an estimate for when lanes would reopen.

About 9:30 p.m., Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services spokesman Scott Graham reported two adults had suffered life-threatening injuries, three women had suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and three others, including two adults and a teenager, had suffered minor injuries.

The state police duty officer, who identified himself only as Cpl. D. Parker, said he could not confirm the number of injuries because officers were still gathering information at the scene.

The accident occurred prior to exit 33 for Connecticut Avenue, according to Parker.

No further information was immediately available.
