Three people, including a child, were killed in a six-vehicle crash Tuesday evening in Millersville, Anne Arundel police said.
Lt. Glenn Shanahan, a police spokesman, said those who died all appeared to be female, with the youngest about 8 years old. Two others suffered life-threatening injuries, and four more were hospitalized with minor injuries after the crash on Route 3 south near Route 32 shortly before 5 p.m., Shanahan said. Six vehicles, including a flatbed truck, were involved.
"It's horrific," Shanahan said. "It's an absolutely horrific scene." Police had not yet notified the families of the victims.
Two of the dead were still at the scene about 8 p.m., while one was flown to a hospital and pronounced dead, Shanahan said. The three who were killed were in the same car, along with two others who were injured, he said.
Shanahan said it appeared that one car had been speeding and crashed into the rear of another vehicle, causing a chain reaction. The crash is under investigation.
Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman posted on Twitter about the incident Tuesday night. "Terrible accident on Route 3 tonight," she said. "Our thoughts are with the families."
Route 3 was closed after the crash and remained so throughout the evening, police said.
