Democrat Conti to run for Anne Arundel executive

Joanna Conti will make her bid to become the next county executive for Anne Arundel County official on June 13.

Conti, a Democrat, announced on Thursday that she'll kick off her campaign with a $25-per-person fundraiser at the Knights of Columbus in Edgewater.

Conti is the first Democrat to formally express interest in the 2014 county executive race. She also ran in 2010, finishing second behind Republican John R. Leopold. Mike Shay of the Green Party finished third.

Since losing that race, Conti has served on the Citizen Advisory Committee for the county school system and founded a nonprofit organization called Anne Arundel cares.

Leopold was convicted of misconduct and resigned earlier this year. He was replaced by current County Executive Laura Neuman, who has formed a campaign committee but has stopped short of saying she's running to keep her job in 2014.

Two Republicans have announced that they're running for county executive: County Councilman John Grasso of Glen Burnie and state Del. Steve Schuh of Gibson Island.
