On the mound
Game 1: RHP Dan Straily (3.80 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) vs. RHP Aaron Nola (3.26, 1.18): Straily gets the start in the first half of the doubleheader in part because, manager Don Mattingly said, he likes pitching in day games. In seven such starts this year, Straily has a 3.46 ERA and 1.41 WHIP while striking out a batter per inning. … Nola has been very good for the past two months — 2.21 ERA, .207/.266/.325 opponents’ slash line — but got hit around a bit in his most recent start. The Giants reached him for five runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings.
Game 2: RHP Jose Urena (3.61, 1.21) vs. RHP Nick Pivetta (6.25, 1.47): Urena has been particularly sharp of late, allowing one or fewer earned run in three out of his past four starts. Length, though, could be an area of improvement for Urena, who has pitched more than six innings just once this year. … Pivetta, 24, will be promoted as the Phillies’ 26th man for the doubleheader. He held the Marlins to three runs in 5 1/3 innings July 19 in Miami.
Wednesday — LHP Justin Nicolino (4.11 ERA, 1.73 WHIP) vs. TBA; Thursday — RHP Vance Worley (4.82, 1.45) vs. RHP Jerad Eickhoff (4.46, 1.49); Friday — TBA vs. LHP Adam Conley (4.93, 1.41)
Friday-Sunday, vs. Padres; Monday-Wednesday, at Nationals; Aug. 31-Sept. 3
