Pedestrian struck, killed on College Pkwy. in Anne Arundel

Anne Arundel County Police say a pedestrian was killed Saturday night when he was struck by a car as he tried to cross College Parkway in Arnold.

The incident occurred just after 9 p.m. Saturday, police said. Officers responded to College Parkway near Bellrive Road and found the victim, identified as 20-year-old Thomas James Grant Becker, of Severn. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the car that struck him was on the westbound shoulder of College Parkway with some damage. The driver and the front seat passenger of the car had minor injuries, but refused treatment, police said.

Investigators from the county's Traffic Safety Section are conducting an investigation, but police said preliminary findings indicate the car had been traveling west on College Parkway when it struck the pedestrian in the westbound lane.

Evidence at the scene suggested the pedestrian had been in the travel portion of the road wearing dark clothing, police said, and pedestrian error was listed as the primary cause. Police noted were no marked crosswalks or pedestrian signals near the area of the crash.

Police said it was unknown if speed or alcohol were contributing factors. The investigation is continuing.
