A 32-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after he hit a National Security Agency police officer with his SUV while evading a traffic stop on Route 32 at Fort Meade, Maryland State Police said.

NSA officers directed the man, identified as Darnell David Hawkins, of Washington, D.C., to pull into a staging area as he approached an agency checkpoint at about 5:45 a.m., State Police said. Hawkins initially stopped, but then sped off, injuring an officer and nearly striking a barricade on NSA property, police said. The extent of the officer's injuries and his condition were not released.

Hawkins left the fort and drove northbound in the southbound lanes of Baltimore-Washington Parkway, where he was later spotted by State Police troopers near West Nursery Road, police said.

After a pursuit on the parkway, Hawkins got out and ran, and troopers arrested him. No troopers were injured.

Hawkins faces a dozen charges including drunken, aggressive and negligent driving, driving with an expired license and evading police, according to online court records.

No lawyer was listed for Hawkins, and no phone number was listed for his Washington, D.C. address.
