A man and a woman were killed in a motorcycle crash after fleeing from a traffic stop early Thursday in Annapolis, police said.

The crash occurred at 1:08 a.m. on King George Street, near the U.S. Naval Academy, police said. Neither victim was affiliated with the academy, said Edward Zeigler, a Naval District Washington spokesman. Their identities will be released after families are notified, he said.

Just before the crash, an Annapolis police officer stopped the motorcycle for several traffic violations at the intersection of Compromise and Duke of Gloucester streets, but the driver took off as the officer walked up to the motorcycle, Annapolis police said.

The officer notified adjacent police agencies of the fleeing driver but did not chase the motorcycle, police said. The officer drove down King George Street and came upon the accident scene, where Department of Defense Police had already responded, Annapolis police said.

"It is unfortunate that a the motorcycle operator decided to flee from the police. His actions cost him and his passenger their lives," said Annapolis Police Chief Michael Pristoop in a statement.

The Department of Defense police are investigating the crash.

The female rider was wearing a helmet, but the man was not, Zeigler said.
