Anne Arundel County police detectives are consulting with county prosecutors as they continue to investigate the fatal Christmas morning shooting by a Glen Burnie store employee of a man he said broke in, police said.
Police said they were at the Arundel County Coin Shop in the 7400 block of Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard four previous times in December, including for a report of a possible break-in early Dec. 10 and for an alarm sounding about 4 a.m. Sunday. They said they also checked a vehicle near there at 12:45 a.m. Monday.
Details, including whether officers were called there for all four visits or were on routine patrol during any, were not available. Police said they could not speak about the investigation.
Police said that when they responded to call at the coin shop about 6:28 a.m. Tuesday, an employee told them a man had broken in, there was an altercation in which the intruder was shot, and the intruder ran out of the business and collapsed.
Byron Keith Phillips, 30, of Chester was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
No charges have been filed and it is unclear whether any will be, police said this week.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
