Volunteer "blanketeers" are needed to sew, quilt, knit or crochet washable and child-friendly blankets for children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need. Department of Aging and Disabilities
Volunteers are needed to assist with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, which helps seniors and low-income adults complete their tax returns. Volunteers will be trained by the IRS and the Maryland comptroller's office. Volunteers only help prepare simple 2013 income tax returns, which will be filed electronically. Volunteers do not prepare tax returns involving partnerships or corporations, self-employed persons or rental properties. Volunteers are not required to have a financial background in order to help with the tax returns, but certified public accountants, attorneys, bookkeepers and those with financial training are encouraged to volunteer. Tutors are needed to combat adult illiteracy. After completing training, you make your own schedule and locations with your assigned student or you can tutor at local detention centers. Hours are flexible and most work can be done at home. Information: 410-269-4419.
Maryland State Archives
Volunteers are needed for document preparation of wills and probate records for digitization between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays in four-hour shifts. Scheduling is flexible and duties include removing fasteners and flattening and organizing documents for scanning. Information: 301-572-4105. The organization needs volunteers at the 511 S. Crain Highway location to serve lunch to the homeless from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Volunteers are also needed to assist kids with homework at the Boys and Girls Club between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays. Volunteers undergo background checks. Also needed are volunteers to help with arts and crafts and sports activities from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays-Fridays. Nonperishable food items and donations of toiletries, clean clothing, large baby diapers, wipes, etc. are always needed.
