Support groups

The Department of Aging and Disabilities has updated a booklet on community support groups. The booklet focuses on groups for caregivers, Alzheimer's disease, bereavement for adults and children, diabetes, brain injury, cancer, stroke, cardiac and pulmonary problems, Parkinson's, and bowel and urinary diversions. Residents' rights

Brochures on residents' rights in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities and another brochure on the ombudsman program protecting those residents are available from the Department of Aging and Disabilities. The brochures are titled "Resident's Rights in Nursing Homes/Rehabilitation Centers in Maryland," "Resident's Rights in Assisted Living Facilities in Maryland" and "Ombudsman: Your Resident Advocate." Senior services

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has published its 2012-2013 edition of "Services for Seniors, Adults with Disabilities and Caregivers." The free directory is printed annually in May (Older Americans Month) and includes information on rental and housing assistance, legal help, county social services benefits and caregiver information. Copies are available at department headquarters, 2666 Riva Road, fourth floor, Annapolis; the seven senior activity centers; county libraries; at CVS, Food Lion and Wawa stores; and online at aacounty.org/aging. Senior housing

Information on assisted-living homes and other housing options for seniors has been updated on the county Department of Aging and Disabilities website at aacounty.org/aging.

Painting class Flo Ormond teaches "One-Stroke Painting" from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Dec. 13. Learn a special way to load paint onto your brush and techniques that can be used to paint many items, including glass, fabric, paper and craft items.

Scrabble Challenge your brain by playing Scrabble, 12:45 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays. New participants are welcome.

Holiday cooking demonstration Food historian Sue Latini and chef Rosalie Falter will offer a Christmas-themed program at 1 p.m. Dec. 14. Cost is $5. The menu consists of an antipasto spread on toast points, butternut squash and green apple soup, spiced pork tenderloin with creamy mushroom gravy, cardamom carrots, and chocolate mousse au Grand Marnier. While the food is being prepared, attendees can ask questions, and holiday food traditions and serving suggestions will be shared.

Weight-loss program Dietitian Sheryl Hoehner will offer a seven-session class on weight loss from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursdays. Topics will include pointers on losing weight, decreasing sodium and increasing fiber in your diet, and strategies for reducing overindulgence during the holidays. Fee is $25.

Book club The center's club meets at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7.

Luncheon Tickets are on sale for the center's Holiday Luncheon being held from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at Michael's Eighth Avenue. Music will be provided by Tim Amann and Pet Rock. Tickets are $20; $18 for members.
