The Department of Aging and Disabilities has updated a booklet on community support groups. The booklet focuses on groups for care giving, Alzheimer's disease, bereavement for adults and children, diabetes, brain injury, cancer, stroke, cardiac and pulmonary problems, Parkinson's, and bowel and urinary diversions. Brochures on residents' rights in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities and another brochure on the ombudsman program protecting those residents are available from the Department of Aging and Disabilities. The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has published its 2012-2013 edition of "Services for Seniors, Adults with Disabilities and Caregivers." The free directory is printed annually in May (Older Americans Month) and includes information on rental and housing assistance, legal help, county social services benefits and caregiver information. Workshop A free hand massage workshop will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25. The workshop begins with demonstrations, followed by the opportunity to give and receive hand massages by other participants. Massage oil will be provided.
Party A "Sailing Way" Halloween party will be held beginning at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 31. The event features a costume contest for all ages, and grandchildren can parade and trick-or-treat from classroom to classroom. Light refreshments will be served, and music will be provided by Swarbrick and Birney.

Painting A Chinese brush painting workshop with instructor Mei Yu Green will be offered from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22. Fee is $5 per person.
Flu shots CVS offers flu shots for center members and the general public from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 23. Medicare Part B will cover the cost.
Party A Monster Mash Dance Party celebrating Halloween will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 31. Participants are invited to wear costumes, with prizes being awarded in various categories. Music will be provided by the Bates Jazz and R&B Ensemble.
Classes Peggy Bruce will teach American Sign Language from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 21. Participants will learn basic signs, numbers and letters and receive an introduction to finger spelling. Also, Flo Ormond will teach "One-Stroke Painting" from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Dec. 13. Learn a special way to load paint on your brush and techniques that can be used to paint many items, including glass, fabric, paper and craft items.

Lecture Tara Brumfeld, a registered nurse and coordinator of the Baltimore Washington Medical Center, will give a talk on strokes at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22 and Wednesday, Oct. 24. Learn the risk factors and how making healthy lifestyle choices can reduce chances of having a stroke. Warning signs and treatment options also will be discussed.
