The Department of Aging and Disabilities has updated a booklet on community support groups. The booklet focuses on groups for caregiving, Alzheimer's disease, bereavement for adults and children, diabetes, brain injury, cancer, stroke, cardiac and pulmonary problems, Parkinson's, and bowel and urinary diversions. Brochures on residents' rights in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities and another brochure on the ombudsman program protecting those residents are available from the Department of Aging and Disabilities. The brochures are titled "Resident's Rights in Nursing Homes/Rehabilitation Centers in Maryland," "Resident's Rights in Assisted Living Facilities in Maryland" and "Ombudsman: Your Resident Advocate." The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has published its 2012-2013 edition of "Services for Seniors, Adults with Disabilities and Caregivers." The free directory is printed annually in May (Older Americans Month) and includes information on rental and housing assistance, legal help, county social services benefits and caregiver information. Workshops Free caregiver workshops titled "Dementia Series: Living in the Land of Oz" will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 8 and 15.

Painting A Chinese brush painting workshop with instructor Mei Yu Green will be offered from noon to 2 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 15 and 22. The fee is $5 per person.
Classes Peggy Bruce will teach American Sign Language from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays through Nov. 21. Participants will learn basic signs, numbers, letters and receive an introduction to finger spelling. Also, Flo Ormond will teach "One-Stroke Painting" from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Dec. 13. Learn a special way to load paint on your brush and techniques that can be used to paint many items, including glass, fabric, paper and craft items.
Scrabble Challenge your brain by playing Scrabble, 12:45 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays. New participants are welcome.

Weight-loss program Dietitian Sheryl Hoehner will offer a seven-session class on weight loss from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursdays. Topics will include pointers on losing weight, decreasing sodium and increasing fiber in your diet, and strategies for reducing overindulgence during the holidays. Fee is $25.
Book club The center's club meets at 9 a.m. the first Friday of each month.

Proceeds help the Hearts of Gold, a group that donates money to Canine Companions for Independence and the Arthritis Foundation.
Estate planning program Attorney Christine Hubbard presents "Estate Planning, Asset Protection and Charitable Giving" at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15. The program will address the fundamentals of estate planning, current estate tax laws, tax planning strategies, asset protection and tax-efficient ways to make charitable gifts.
Medicare A representative from the Department of Aging and Disabilities will talk on Medicare open enrollment and preventive care services at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.
