Information on assisted-living homes and other housing options for seniors has been updated on the county Department of Aging and Disabilities website at http://www.aacounty.org/aging.
The Foster Grandparents Program of the county Department of Aging and Disabilities seeks volunteer grandparents to mentor children with special needs. Volunteers serve 15 to 40 hours a week, providing mentoring, tutoring, advice and attention. Volunteers also teach life skills to children in special education classes and provide staffing for a homeless shelter, family support center and other agencies. Activities may include reading stories, listening, helping children feed themselves, setting the table, working with puzzles, and helping children learn colors, numbers and the alphabet. Volunteers must be income-eligible and at least 60 years old. Benefits include a tax-free stipend, paid training, vacation, sick leave, free transportation, lunch and a physical exam.
