Arts center gala

The Chesapeake Arts Center's annual gala will be held from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Four Points by Sheraton BWI Airport, 7032 Elm Road. This year's theme, "Believe in Magic," is in honor of Harry Houdini's birthday. Music will be provided by the acoustic duo Rick and Regina. In addition, magician Spencer Horsman will perform a show to honor Houdini. Evening includes hors d' oeuvres, an open bar, dinner, dancing and a silent auction.

Tickets are $110 ($40 tax-deductible) or $1,000 for a table of 10 and can be purchased by calling 410-636-6597.

Human relations panel

The county Human Relations Commission is seeking applicants to fill a vacancy.

The 11-member commission is a volunteer body established to promote fairness, eliminate discrimination and harassment in both public and private sectors, and advance understanding and effective communication among people of different backgrounds and cultures.

Applicants must be at least 18, a county resident, and able to attend evening meetings on the third Wednesday of the month. Legal experience is preferred but not required. Interested people should send a resume and letter of intent to: Johnelka Stafford, 44 Calvert St., Room 330, Annapolis 2140.

Mentoring awards

Nominations are being accepted for the seventh annual Mentoring Awards, which recognize people who are striving to make a difference in the lives of young people. Nominations should be submitted for the following categories:

•Volunteer of the year.

•Community-based.

•Business-based.

•Faith-based.

•Mentor of the year.

•Peer.

Lifetime.

The awards ceremony will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 15 at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center, 273 Hilltop Lane in Annapolis.
