Annapolis man found guilty of sex abuse, assault of minor

A 71-year-old Annapolis man was found guilty Monday of sexual child abuse, two counts of assault, one count of attempted second-degree rape and other charges related to incidents involving an 11-year-old girl.

William Clarence Coates was found guilty in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court in a trial before Judge J. Michael Wachs, according to State's Attorney Anne Colt Leitess.

Prosecutors said the incidents took place at an Annapolis residence over a five-month span beginning in March 2013. The victim reported the man took a series of photographs of her using his cell phone, some of which were without clothing, and that he had attempted intercourse with her.

"This young girl was extremely courageous to come forward and testify against her abuser," Leitess said.

Sentencing will be held August 25.
