Officials find shotgun, alcohol in Southern High student's car trunk

A 16-year-old student was arrested at an Anne Arundel County high school Thursday after police found alcohol and a 12-gauge shotgun in his truck, police said.

Police said another student at Southern High School approached a teacher and said the student appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, police said, so administrators brought the 16-year-old into the office.

During the conversation, the student told administrators he had driven a truck to school, though he was not authorized to park on campus. Officials "had reason to believe the truck contained contraband prohibited on school property," police said.

Administrators called the school resource officer and searched the truck, and uncovered an unloaded shotgun in the truck bed as well as a single, unspent 12-gauge shotgun shell and a bottle of alcohol in the cab, police said.

The student was arrested and taken to the Anne Arundel County Southern District police station. Police said he had made no threats against anyone at the school. He will face disciplinary sanctions from the school system as well as criminal charges. As a minor, he was not identified by police.
