George Lesher pitches Severna Park into legion state semifinals

George Lesher threw five shutout innings and a quartet of batters each collected three hits to guide Severna Park Post 175 to a convincing 13-0 five-inning victory against host Salisbury Post 64 Thursday to continue its run in this week’s Maryland State American Legion baseball tournament, which is being held at the Parker Sports Complex.

With the win, Severna Park (20-5) has reached the final four of the state tournament and will square off against defending champion La Plata Post 82 Friday.

“I guess the biggest thing is that we’re playing every day again,” Post 175 manager Bob Hallet said. “It helps with timing (and) hitting. The boys are coming alive but we’re in the final four now.”

While Lesher was holding Salisbury’s bats at bay, his teammates, specifically Scott Huntley, Cam Clark, Luke Guy and Jake Hallet, helped Post 175 open up a 7-0 lead after two innings, including a five-run second inning. Lesher, Huntley, Clark, Guy and Hallet each had three hits, Hallet, who tripled, drove in three runs while Clark and Guy brought home two runs apiece.

La Plata defeated then two-time defending champion Funkstown Post 211, 18-6, in last year’s state final.
