Prep roundup: Owens leads way as Severn wins crown at San Diego tourney

LJ Owens scored 31 points to pace Severn to a 72-53 win over Kelso High School of Washington in the championship game of the Boys Surf Division at the Surf ‘N Slam San Diego Hoop Classic on Saturday.

Jermaine Hall added 18 points and A.J. Burch accounted for 12 for Severn (11-2), which went unbeaten in the tournament.

Governor’s Challenge

AACS 60, MCKINLEY TECH 53: Jordan Johnson went a perfect 8 for 8 from the field — 4 for 4 from 3-point range and 4 for 4 from inside the arc — to finish with 20 points and lead the Eagles to the win over the Trainers and the championship of Bracket No. 14 at the Governor’s Challenge, billed as “The Largest Holiday Basketball Tournament in the Country.”

Aaron Celcis added 17 points and seven rebounds and Dylin Borden finished with 12 points and four assists for AACS (7-3).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

AACS Christmas Tournament

AACS 57, DELAWARE COUNTY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL (Pa.) 12: The Sims sisters, Koi and Camille, each scored 14 points, with Koi grabbing 12 rebounds and Camille adding six, to lead Annapolis Area Christian School to a lopsided 57-12 victory over Delaware County Christian School to win the AACS Christmas Tournament.

Deja Bristol anchored a stifling defense while scoring seven points, pulling down nine rebounds, to go with four steals and two blocks to earn the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Reniyah Ross added 10 points, four assists and three steals, while guards Morgan DeBeary, Paige Adebo and Ani Gadson shut down the Knights guards with great pressure. DeBeary finished with three assists and six steals and Adebo had three assists and three steals.

Adebo and Ross were named to the All Tournament Team for AACS (11-2).

Serious Hoops Holiday Jam

ARUNDEL 50, CROSSLAND 48: Jayln Richardson had 12 points and three steals, Ariana Harmon added 11 points and eight rebounds and Nicole Seven contributed 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Wildcats came back from an 8-point, third-quarter deficit to defeat the Cavaliers to take the consolation game.

Aloni Quille provided nine points and five rebounds and Janelle Smith grabbed seven boards for Arundel (3-5).

Western Tournament

GLEN BURNIE 50, EDMONDSON-WESTSIDE 14: Tierra Harris tallied a game-high 17 points to lead the Gophers to their first victory by weathering the Redstorm in the consolation game of the Western Tournament. Brianna Day added seven points, Jahye Brown had six points and Jaya Dews produced five points for Glen Burnie (1-7).

WRESTLING

MOUNT MAT MADNESS: Archbishop Spalding took fifth place with 137.5 points in the tournament at Mount Saint Joseph High School. Archbishop Curley crowned five champions to win the team title with 298 points.
