Field hockey: Eckels, Munley score as Broadneck holds off Chesapeake

Emily Eckels and Megan Munley notched first-half goals and Broadneck fought off a strong Chesapeake comeback to earn a 2-1 victory in field hockey on Monday.

Teresa Pelli collected the assist on Eckels’ goal. Peri Long made nine saves and got help from the tandem of Sophia Hartman and Olivia Abe on the defensive end, as the Cougars ramped up their pressure in the second half, which yielded numerous penalty corners.

Hannah McKeon finally broke through with a goal with 19:45 left in the contest, with Logan Beal tallying the assist. Eve Vickery made five saves in the first half and Alexis wade added three second-half saves for Chesapeake (11-3). Broadneck is now 7-3-1.

SEVERN 3, MOUNT DE SALES 1: Olivia Smith scored off a penalty corner, Hailey Schendel found the back of the cage with the assist credited to Sophie Oliver and Lexi Burchfield tallied a goal on a rebound off the goalkeeper’s pads as the Admirals erased a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Sailors.

Reilly Miller made two saves and Liz Chappell had a goal-line stick save for Severn (8-6).

ST. MARY’S RYKEN 3, SOUTHERN 1: Dalanie Tompkins put the Bulldogs on the board with a first-half goal, assisted by Emily Kissinger, but the Knights scored twice in the second half for the victory.

Carly West made five saves for Southern (8-6).

SOUTH RIVER 5, ANNAPOLIS 0: Darcy Clement scored two goals and Caroline Kerr, Jessie Wynne and Aly Yates had one goal apiece as the Seahawks shut out the Panthers. Madeline Cloyd, Kaylee Mia Geist, Allison Corey and Anna Kohler each had an assist.

South River (8-6) outshot Annapolis (6-6) by a 19-2 margin with Annapolis’ Molly Murnane making 14 saves.
