A locomotive at an Odenton maintenance yard caught fire Wednesday morning, damaging the train engine but nothing else.
Capt. Russ Davis, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, said the blaze was reported at 6:30 a.m. on the 500 block of Old Waugh Chapel Road with flames coming from the locomotive’s stack.
Firefighters initially tried to extinguish flames with a dry chemical agent but it didn’t work.
“They put the dry agent in the stack and then it blew back out,” he said.
Videos the county fire department and BWI Fire and Rescue put on Twitter show a purple substance being sprayed onto the locomotive and purple plumes billowing upward.
Davies said crews changed tactics and used a foaming agent to put out the fire by 8 a.m. There were no injuries and no damage to anything surrounding the locomotive, Davies said.
