STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (WPIX)—A special education teacher who was struck by a car while jogging with his girlfriend on Staten Island has died.
Daniel Kelley, 23, was mowed down Tuesday by an aspiring model allegedly high on prescription drugs. He succumbed to his injuries at Staten Island University Hospital Sunday.
Kelly and his girlfriend, Gina Sinclari, 18, of Eltingville were hit while jogging along Hylan Boulevard in Annadale. They were struck between Lipsett Avenue and Dole Street near Blue Heron Park, where there are no sidewalks and few street lights.
Kelley suffered severe head and cheat trauma, and remained in extremely critical condition. Sinclari suffered a broken ankle, scrapes and bruises.
Immediately following the crash, the driver, Gypsy Porfirio, 34, told police she "blacked out at the wheel." She reportedly took four pills less than an hour before the accident.
A search revealed 45 pills of the oxycodone, a painkiller and 15 pills of alprazolam, an antidepressant, being carried by Ms. Porfirio in her boots and the waistband area of her jeans, police said.
Porfirio, who expressed remorse for the incident, is free on $150,00 bail and is due back in court Monday.
