This year's MTV Video Music Awards began with a tribute to Michael Jackson, starring his sister Janet and quickly turned into an even more memorable moment when Madonna made a surprise appearance.

The singer gave a heart felt speech about her relationship with Jackson, and recalled the moment she learned about the King of Pop's death.

"We had let this magnificent creature who had once set the world on fire slip through the cracks," said Madonna. "Most of us had turned our backs on him...there will never be anyone like him again. He was a king."

The VMA's, hosted by British comedian Russell Brand, made its return to New York at Radio City Music Hall, for the first time since 2006.

Beyonce and Lady GaGa have nine nominations each. Both artists will perform, along with Jay-Z, Taylor Swift and Green Day, to name a few.

And it's not all about music this year, 'Twilight' stars Robert Pattinson, Kirsten Stewart and Taylor Lautner will present clips from the highly anticipated movie's sequel, ' New Moon.'
