NEW YORK (WPIX)—During opening arguments in the trial of New York State Sen. Hiram Monserrate, prosecutors charged that his ex-girlfriend cried in the hospital and told a nurse she blamed the Queens lawmaker for cutting up her face with broken glass during a heated altercation at his Jackson Heights home in December.
Assistant District Attorney Scott Kessler told a judge in Queens Criminal Court Monday that 30-year-old Karla Giraldo cried to a nurse after the fight, "My face! My face! I can't believe he did this to me." Giraldo needed 20 stitches to repair her face, police said.
Monserrate, 42, has pleaded not guilty to assault charges in the incident - in which he is accused of smashing broken glass into his girlfriends face during a heated fight on Dec. 19. Both he and his girlfriend now claim it was all an accident.
Initially, prosecutors claim Giraldo said she was attacked but later retracted her story after she learned he would be arrested.
Monserrate faces a 7-year prison term and may lose his senate seat if convicted on the top charge.
