ASTORIA (WPIX)—A sanitation worker was struck and killed by a tractor trailer in Queens Tuesday morning, Department of Sanitation officials said.
Frank Justich, 41, of Flushing was pinned between his garbage truck and the tractor trailer just before 8 a.m. at 35th St and Ditmars Blvd in Astoria.
He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in Astoria initially in serious condition, but was soon pronounced dead.
Justich was an 11-year veteran of the Department of Sanitation and is survived by a wife and two small children, said Harry Nespoli, President of the New York City's Uniformed Sanitationmen's Association, Local 831 IBT.
"Our sympathy goes out to the family of Frank Justich," said Nespoli.
"New York City sanitation workers have one of the most strenuous and dangerous jobs in the country," he added. "This is the tenth death of a sanitation worker on the job in the last six years," Nespoli said.
