The evening commute on the Ronkonkoma Branch of the Long Island Railroad was brought to a grinding halt on Tuesday when an eastbound train struck a man.

The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m.near the Brentwood station. According to police, the victim was a male, but so far his identity and age have not be released.

MTA officials say service was temporarily suspended in both eastbound and westbound directions when the accident occurred. Currently, limited eastbound service is available on the branch, east of Farmingdale. There are residual delays of up to one hour

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
