A Greenport man is in police custody after allegedly whistling at two young girls, throwing pebbles at their windows and ultimately breaking into their home where he apparently exposed himself to them.

Authorities say James Lawrence, 33, of 430 Second St., is charged with second-degree burglary and public lewdness. He was arrested Monday at 2:33 a.m. as he was leaving the victim's home located at Main Street.

The two young girls -- ages 11 and 15 -- are both Greenport residents, police said.

According to investigators, Lawrence gained the attention of the girls by whistling and throwing pebbles at their window.

Records indicate Lawrence has a prior rap sheet - including serving time in jail last year for several previous counts of public lewdness in the village. Southold Town Police Capt. Martin Flatley said Lawrence had been out of jail "for some time now."

Lawrence is expected to go before a judge Monday in Southold Town Justice Court.
