PORT RICHMOND, N.Y. (WPIX)—A Staten Island grandmother was crushed to death underneath an 18-wheeler as she was walking back to her home at the Buckingham retirement center, New York City police said.
The incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday as Theresa Alonso, 64, was crossing Richmond Terrace in Port Richmond after picking up a newspaper at a nearby bodega.
Alonso -- who walked slowly with a cane after recently undergoing hip replacement surgery -- was reportedly halfway across the road when the light turned green and the massive tractor trailer mowed her down.
The driver of the truck told police he didn't see the elderly woman over the hood of the truck. Police say he was not arrested or issued a summons.
Authorities say Alonso -- who was on her way to a barbeque she had helped plan with a friend -- died instantly.
Alonso's children and grandchildren reside in Florida.
