Have you recently received an invite via Facebook to become a fan of IKEA, Target or Walmart... with the offer of a $1,000 gift card for joining? You'll be waiting forever to cash in. As a matter of fact, you can expect spam and lots of it instead. Even worse, if you raced through the registration process, giving up your personal information... you may be slapped with a monthly fee. Facebook says those gift card offers are a hoax.

Here's how the scam works. Users are asked to sign up for fake fan pages. To get the gift card, in some cases, users actually have to apply for a credit card, sign up for subscriptions and join clubs where fees are involved. No one ever actually receives a gift card. Walmart issued a statement saying, "The gift card offers currently posted on Facebook are not sanctioned by Walmart. We do not solicit online for individuals to complete online surveys for gift cards, nor do we send unsolicited emails asking individuals to participate in our surveys." Similarly, IKEA says it's taking action to cease and desist all Facebook promotions. IKEA does not endorse nor has it created this promotion.
