NEWARK, N.J. (WPIX)—Former Seton Hall basketball coach Bobby Gonzalez was arrested on shoplifting and criminal mischief charges for stealing a pricey satchel from a store in the Short Hills Mall, police said.
The incident happened at the Polo Ralph Lauren store on June 30.
Officials say the satchel was valued at $1,395 and was damaged in the area where a sensor tag had been attached.
Gonzalez was fired March 17 after Texas Tech defeated Seton Hall in the opening round of the 2010 NIT. He has since filed a lawsuit against the university, however in turn, the university wagered a counter suit against him in June.
The Essex County prosecutor's office says the shoplifting charge is a third-degree offense and punishable by up to five years behind bars.
Gonzalez was hired in April 2006 after seven seasons as head coach at Manhattan College and was reportedly signed to a three-year contract extension last year.
