HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. (WPIX)—A Huntington Manor firefighter is being hailed a hero Monday after he revived a cat from smoke inhalation during a weekend fire.
Lt. John Damico found Franklin, a black and white kitten with green eyes, lying unmoved on top of the stair case in a three story home at 1 Sandra Ct. in Huntington Station Saturday.
"The cat was pretty much unconscious," Damico told Newsday. "It wasn't looking good."
Firefighters carried the lifeless cat outside and took turns giving him chest compressions. Two minutes later, Franklin came back to life and was transported to an ambulance, where he was given a special oxygen mask designed for a pet.
The cat's owner, Betty Ann Jacobsen, had escaped the fire to a neighbor's house with some facial burns and was taken to a hospital, police said.
The cause of the fire has not been determined but police believe it's not suspicious.
Franklin has been staying with Damico, whose mother is a veterinarian, until his owner can claim him.
The cat seems happy and is in high spirit but "needs a little bath," Damico said.
