QUEENS, N.Y. (WPIX)—A man driving his Mercedes-Benz against traffic on the Long Island Expressway slammed into an airport shuttle van just after 6 a.m. Monday.
Dave Richards, 30, of Hempstead, was drunk and speeding when he crashed near the Kissena Boulevard exit while driving the wrong way on the eastbound side of the LIE, police said.
The Super Shuttle wasn't carrying any passengers at the time, but both its driver John Rey, 64, and Richards sustained serious injuries and were transported to the New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens where they are listed in critical condition.
Richards will be charged with driving while intoxicated, reckess endangerment and driving with a suspended license after a blood test revealed a blood alcohol level of 1.9, 1.1 more than the legal limit, police said.
A police investigation is ongoing.
