QUEENS PLAZA (WPIX)—If you've ever ridden a bus you've likely heard the announcement that assaulting of a bus driver is a state offense.
Still, last year there were nearly 100 assaults on transit workers, and now Senator Eric Adams wants to arm them with taser guns. A taser gun is able to take down a 200 pound man in just seconds.
The senator says drivers need them to ward off some of those innate passengers that can become violent quickly, which is why the senator is pushing for the change, to stop the string of attacks. He's working to amend a bill already in place to include bus drivers.
Although many passengers believe the change could be a good thing, others worry the transit workers could get trigger happy. Nonetheless, Adams says the change is needed as a safety measure.
