The nonprofit organization that runs the zoo, aquarium and insectarium in New Orleans lost $187,886 last year.

A financial summary on the Audubon Nature Institute's Web site shows surpluses up until 2008. Institute spokeswoman Sarah Burnette says Hurricane Gustav caused that deficit.

The institute runs the facilities for the Audubon Commission, a public agency.

Burnett says a 2-mill Orleans Parish property tax covers about 10 percent of the institute's cost.

A Deloitte and Touche audit of the Commission for the Legislative Auditor's Office showed a more than $18 million operating loss in 2008.

Burnette said that is a "governmental accounting which depreciates assets," and the true loss was less than $200,000.
