Doctors at Ochsner Medical Center performed a life-saving surgery on four-year-old twin girls.

At birth, Abby and Anna Loy were diagnosed with an abnormal hole in the wall between their hearts' upper chambers.

The girls are from Shreveport and came to the New Orleans area for the minimally invasive procedure because it's unavailable in their home town.

The procedure at Ochsner allowed the girls to avoid open heart surgery.

"It's very nerveracking you know. You never want to see your child go through this even though it's not invasive, and we don't have to do the open heart as they did in the past with this defect. I think anytime you're invading a major organ there's risk even though it's small you know it's still there and as a mom you hate for anything to happen to your children," said the girls' mother, Wendy Loy.

This is the first time Ochsner performed the surgery on twins on the same day.
