NEW ORLEANS—The death of 39-year-old Brian Harris of 7700 block of Allison Road who was fatally shot by a Seventh District New Orleans Police Officer around 10 p.m. Friday evening is being investigated by the NOPD.
According to investigators, Mr. Harris' wife telephoned the police department reporting that her husband was threatening suicide, armed with a knife, and suspected of consuming an overdose of "sleeping pills."
Seventh Districts Officers along with two supervisors responded to the report and met with the wife who directed the officers to a bedroom. The entrance door had been barricaded with furniture and attempts to get the distraught man to open the door were successful. The furniture was pushed aside allowing the door to open.
The officers entered the room and found the adult male in the bed holding a knife. Several commands were given for Mr. Harris to disarm himself and he refused to comply. He was tased by two different officers and those attempts were unsuccessful.
The armed male moved toward the officers when one officer drew his weapon and fired twice, hitting the adult in the torso. Emergency Medical Technicians transported him to University Hospital where he died a short time later.
Homicide Sergeant Christopher Kalka is in charge of this ongoing investigation with the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office to review his findings. Members of the Public Integrity Bureau were on the scene to conduct an independent review.
As per standard policy, the unnamed Seventh District Officer was placed on administrative reassignment pending a review by the Superintendent of Police. As of this time, the officer's name has not been made available.
