RIVERFRONT—Eating healthy and working out are two key components to a healthy life style, and that's just what hundreds of students from New Orleans are focusing on along side former NFL stars. ABC26 News Reporter Vanessa Bolano shows us what they're up to.
Tuesday morning 5th and 6th graders from Benjamin Franklin Elementary broke a sweat at Woldenberg Park along side former NFL stars Marshall Faulk, Steve Gleason, and Willie Roaf.
6TH grader Ebrie says, "It feels great to know that there's somebody here that's famous and they can teach us a little bit about the drill."
Ijohli, also a 6th grader, says, "I don't really know too much about football, but I really got a chance to learn a lot about football."
Besides learning about football, the players hope students see how much fun they can have playing outdoors. It's all part of the NFL Play 60 youth health and fitness campaign.
Former St. Louis Rams standout, Marshall Faulk is from New Orleans and wants to make sure students know there's much more to New Orleans, if they're willing to explore.
"I went to school here, born and raised, so they can relate and that's all you want sometimes, is to see someone who came from a similar situation like yourself and has done well, and I try to pass that message on to them to look beyond your neighborhood, look beyond your surroundings and expect more of yourself."
6th grader Dariane says, "My favorite is? Well, the whole thing actually."
Throughout the week 700 5th and 6th graders from various New Orleans schools will work out at the park, and besides getting physical, NFL stars hope to get students to commit to healthy eating habits as well.
Former Saint Steve Gleason says, "If I can help in any way and teach these kids that you literally are what you eat, and that you can pay attention to it and you can improve your athletic performance by doing so, you know that's what I'm here to do."
The program continues through Thursday.
The following schools are scheduled to participate: Benjamin Franklin Elementary Eleanor McMain High School Esperanza School Haynes School Hazel Park Elementary KIPP Leadership Academy Louisiana International School KIPP McDonogh 15 School for the Creative Arts McDonogh 35 College Preparatory High School Ruppel Academy Warren Easton Charter School Woodmere Elementary
