He will go down as one of the greatest Photographers of our time. At one point in his much traveled life, Herman Leonard lived here in New Orleans.

Singer Tony Bennet said, "No one photographs better than Herman Leonard. Leonard died Saturday outside of Los Angeles.

Leonard was considered the greartest Jazz Photographer.

He captured the likes of Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatri.

his career spanned six decades.

Leonard moved to New Orleans in 1992.

He took photos of such local legends as Dr. John, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and Irvin Mayfield.

Leonard was best known for his smoky, backlit portraits.

Leonard lived in Lakeview at the time of the storm. He lost more than 8 thousand prints in the flood. Fortunately his negatives were saved. They were housed at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.
