BATON ROUGE—Bolstered by a traditionally good month in the gambling business, Louisiana's state-licensed casinos in July posted a 13.9 percent increase in winnings from June.
Still, the July take of $220.3 million was down 5.1 percent from July 2008.
State police say the 13 riverboats won $154.6 million last month, while Harrah's downtown New Orleans casino took in $29.5 million. The four slot machine casinos at race tracks won $36.1 million.
The casino industry nationwide has been lagging because of cutbacks in travel and the recession. July is typically boosted by the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
