A special election to fill a New Orleans-based seat in the state House of Representatives will be held in May.

The vacancy was created when Rep. Karen Carter Peterson, a Democrat, was elected to the state Senate.

House Speaker Jim Tucker set the special election date for May 1, with a run-off on May 29 if needed. Qualifying for the race will be held from March 30 until April 1.

A May 1 election also will be held in Baton Rouge to fill the House seat that had been held by Rep. Avon Honey, who died unexpectedly last month.
