Authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was plucked from beneath the wharf along the French Quarter riverfront.

The body was discovered Monday on the rocky shore of the Mississippi River.

John Gagliano, chief investigator for the Orleans Parish coroner, tells The Times-Picayune the cause of death was not immediately clear and the man's identity was unknown.

Gagliano said the dead man appeared to be in his late 40s.
