Though prices for a Hindmarch luxury tote at her Robertson Boulevard boutique generally start at $995 for a piece in her main collection and can reach $6,500 for a bespoke crocodile bag, her Target line of au courant handbags retails for a down-to-earth $19.99 to $49.
Hindmarch has cultivated a 20-year reputation for her work, and the London-based handbag stylist has a well-heeled set of fans -- Madonna, Kate Moss, Reese Witherspoon and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher -- slinging her creations.
She's been a hit in less lofty realms as well. Last year she designed a cotton tote for a British supermarket chain that read "I'm not a plastic bag" and sold for under $10. The stock of 20,000 was snapped up in less than an hour.
Her collection for Target features her greatest hits, such as hobo bags, totes and clutches in blue, black and tan faux leather reminiscent of the "naplak" patent leather in her signature collection, with gold metallic trim, a lining with interior pockets and a similar slouchy hang.
Like most "It" bags, they won't be around for long. The limited-edition collection debuts Oct. 12 and is set to be on the shelves for two months -- or until it disappears.
