PORT ARTHUR, Texas (AP) - A tip led law officers to about 80 roosters suspected of being used in an illegal cockfighting ring in a rural area of Jefferson County.
Port Arthur police helped locate the operation in a wooded area near Port Acres and seize the animals.
Investigators say trees had been cleared and a road led to the compound where dozens of roosters, some of them dead, were found in crude cages Wednesday.
Police say the operators of the site are sought.
Animal control supervisor Anthony Mitchell says law officers have broken up four cockfighting operations this year in the Port Arthur area.
